In a conflict with the devil it isn’t enough to say, “This is the Word of God,” for it is the devil’s greatest [trick] to take away one’s weapon when fear suddenly strikes…. He is hostile to us. We don’t know a hundredth part of what he knows…. It is the supreme art of the devil that he can make the law out of the gospel…. The devil turns the Word upside down.44

People hear the good news of forgiveness in the gospel. Forgiveness is not based on any prequalification. But Satan is a “sour soul.” The result? People respond by saying they will live better lives, try harder, and endeavor to be better. The Word has indeed been turned upside down. To overcome the devil, therefore, the believer must rest in all the blessings that are freely given to him in Christ and rejoice in them. Thus, at the end of the day, the gospel turns the devil upside down.
